Creative Writing Specialization

Written for anyone who wants to write stories, poems or true personal accounts, this guide explores the craft behind each form. It looks closely at character, point of view, imagery, structure and revision, drawing on examples from published work. Readers are encouraged to write regularly on their own and to develop a voice that feels genuinely theirs.

About this study guide

Creative writing is learned mostly by reading closely and writing often. This material supports both. Its chapters on fiction discuss how to build believable characters, shape a plot, handle dialogue and choose a point of view. The poetry chapters look at sound, line breaks, imagery and form, while the memoir chapters consider memory, honesty and how to turn personal experience into a shaped narrative.

Each topic is illustrated with short passages and followed by writing prompts you can use in a notebook at home. There is also practical guidance on drafting, cutting and rewriting, and on reading your own work with a fresh eye.

The guide is organised into four levels, Beginner to Expert, so early chapters focus on getting words onto the page and later ones on subtler questions of style, structure and voice.
Each level is unlocked separately

01
Level 1

Beginner

215 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

The material introduces the building blocks of creative writing: showing rather than telling, concrete detail, simple character sketches, first and third person point of view, and basic story shape. Sections on poetic imagery and on turning a memory into a scene complete the foundations, each followed by writing prompts.

  • Suited to

This level suits anyone who has always wanted to write stories, poems or personal pieces but has not known where to start. If you keep a notebook of ideas, love reading fiction or poetry, or simply want a creative habit, this stage offers a gentle beginning.

  • What you will be able to apply

After this level, you will be able to write a short scene with a clear character and setting, draft a simple poem built on vivid images, and turn a personal memory into a brief narrative. You should feel ready to write regularly on your own.

02
Level 2

Intermediate

415 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

This stage explores character motivation and conflict, writing natural dialogue, pacing a plot through scenes and summary, and choosing between close and distant point of view. Poetry chapters look at line breaks and sound, while memoir chapters address honesty and selection. A first approach to revision closes the level.

  • Suited to

Choose this level if you already write short pieces and want them to hold a reader's attention for longer. It suits writers who finish drafts but feel something is missing, and who want practical techniques for character, dialogue, structure and revision.

  • What you will be able to apply

By the end of this level, you should be able to build characters whose choices drive a story, write dialogue that sounds believable, and revise a draft with a clear purpose. You will be able to read published work and notice how its effects are made.

03
Level 3

Advanced

715 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

Here you study subtext and implication, non-linear structure and multiple timelines, unreliable narrators, sustained metaphor and received poetic forms such as the sonnet and villanelle. The material also covers combining forms, as in lyric essays and prose poetry, and methods for structural revision of longer manuscripts.

  • Suited to

This level is meant for writers with a body of work who want greater control and ambition. It suits those experimenting with longer stories, poem sequences or extended memoir, and anyone who wants to handle complex structure, subtext and tone with more precision.

  • What you will be able to apply

You will be able to shape longer pieces with deliberate structure, convey meaning through what characters leave unsaid, and work confidently within or against traditional poetic forms. You should feel ready to revise at the level of the whole piece, not only the sentence.

04
Level 4

Expert

1,015 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

This deepest stage examines voice and style as a set of consistent choices, the trade-offs between clarity and ambiguity, restraint and intensity, and the ethics of writing about real people. It brings craft elements together through close reading of accomplished work and extended self-editing of your own manuscripts.

  • Suited to

The Expert level is for committed writers who want to refine a personal voice and make difficult artistic decisions with confidence. It suits people who write across forms, read critically and want to understand what makes their own work distinct.

  • What you will be able to apply

After working through this level, you should be able to recognise and strengthen the qualities that make your writing yours, weigh competing artistic choices thoughtfully, and edit your own work with a critical, generous eye. You will be able to sustain a long project with purpose.
