About this study guide

Clear pronunciation depends less on sounding like a particular accent and more on stress, rhythm and a handful of key sounds. This material explains how English vowels and consonants are formed, describing the position of the tongue, lips and jaw, and uses the International Phonetic Alphabet so you can check pronunciations in any dictionary.

Later sections look at word stress, weak forms, linking between words and the rise and fall of intonation in questions and statements. Common difficulties for speakers of different first languages, such as th, r and l, or short and long vowels, are described alongside minimal pairs you can read aloud and compare.

Organised in four levels, from Beginner to Expert, the guide encourages regular, focused practice on your own, helping you speak with greater clarity and ease over time.

  • Suited to

Meant for non-native speakers who want to understand how English sounds are formed before working on accent. If certain sounds feel impossible or the phonetic symbols in dictionaries look confusing, this level introduces both in a clear, calm way.

  • What you will be able to apply

After this level you should be able to read phonetic symbols in any dictionary, produce the th sounds and key vowel contrasts more accurately, and practise difficult words aloud on your own with a clear method.

02
Level 2

Intermediate

415 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

Word stress rules for two-syllable nouns and verbs, stress shifts in word families such as photograph and photography, the schwa sound, minimal pairs such as ship and sheep, consonant clusters and final consonants, and the pronunciation of -ed and -s endings.

  • Suited to

Aimed at learners who can produce most English sounds but still find their speech hard to follow at times. This level suits anyone ready to move from individual sounds to word stress and the patterns that shape clear pronunciation.

  • What you will be able to apply

You will be able to place stress correctly in common words, use the schwa in unstressed syllables, distinguish similar vowel sounds and pronounce past tense and plural endings clearly enough for listeners to follow you easily.

03
Level 3

Advanced

715 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

Sentence stress and the stress-timed rhythm of English, weak forms of words such as and, to and of, linking between consonants and vowels, elision, assimilation and intrusive sounds, plus contrastive stress to highlight new or important information.

  • Suited to

For learners with clear individual sounds who want their English to flow more naturally. Choose this stage if your words are accurate but your speech still sounds careful or disconnected, and you want to master rhythm and connected speech.

  • What you will be able to apply

By the end of this stage you should be able to speak with a more natural English rhythm, link words smoothly, use weak forms where native speakers do, and shift stress to emphasise the meaning you intend.

04
Level 4

Expert

1,015 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

Intonation patterns in questions, statements, lists and tag questions, rising and falling tones to show certainty or doubt, tone units and pausing, prosody in longer speech, and differences between major accents such as British and American, so you can choose a consistent model.

  • Suited to

Written for confident speakers who want refined control of English pronunciation. If you are already easy to understand and now want to use intonation, rhythm and emphasis deliberately, this level brings all the elements together for precise expression.

  • What you will be able to apply

You will be able to use intonation to convey attitude and meaning, organise longer speech with effective pausing, maintain a consistent accent model and adjust pronunciation for clarity in presentations or discussions.
