About this study guide

French spelling can look puzzling at first, so this material starts by showing how letters and sounds connect, including silent endings, nasal vowels and the linking of words in speech. Once those patterns are familiar, you move on to everyday vocabulary for food, family, work, weather and getting around a town.

The grammar sections explain masculine and feminine nouns, definite and indefinite articles, adjective agreement, and the present tense of common regular and irregular verbs such as être, avoir and aller. Short dialogues and sample paragraphs show each structure in context, and suggestions at the end of each part encourage you to write your own sentences.

Content is grouped into four levels, from Beginner through Intermediate and Advanced to Expert, giving you a clear sense of progress as your reading and writing grow more confident.

Grammar covers masculine and feminine nouns, definite and indefinite articles, adjective agreement, simple negation with ne and pas, and the present tense of être, avoir and regular -er verbs.

  • Suited to

A gentle starting point for anyone with no French at all. It suits readers who find French spelling confusing and want the links between letters and sounds explained patiently, whether they are planning a visit, returning to a long-forgotten school subject or starting completely fresh.

  • What you will be able to apply

You will be able to introduce yourself, describe people and places, and talk about your daily routine in simple French. You should also feel ready to pronounce written words with reasonable confidence and to read short notices, menus and messages without being thrown by silent letters.

Themes include travel, work, health and shopping, illustrated with realistic dialogues and short texts.

  • Suited to

Meant for readers who already know the French present tense and basic vocabulary and now want to tell stories, make plans and manage everyday situations. It suits anyone who understands simple texts but struggles to link sentences or talk about events that have already happened.

  • What you will be able to apply

After working through this stage you should be able to describe past events, discuss plans and handle common exchanges in shops, stations and offices. You will be able to read straightforward articles and letters and write connected paragraphs using a range of tenses with growing accuracy.
