About this study guide

German has a reputation for complexity, yet its rules are remarkably consistent once they are laid out clearly. This study guide takes you from first greetings and the alphabet through to the kind of language needed to handle familiar situations with some independence, broadly matching the A1, A2 and B1 stages of the Common European Framework.

Along the way you will work through the four cases, articles and adjective endings, separable verbs, modal verbs, the perfect and simple past tenses, and the rules that place the verb at the end of subordinate clauses. Vocabulary is grouped by theme, including housing, shopping, health, work and leisure, and each theme is supported by short reading texts.

These learning materials are divided into four levels, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Expert, so that grammar and vocabulary build on one another in a sensible order.
Each level is unlocked separately

01
Level 1

Beginner

215 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

Covers the German alphabet and pronunciation, including umlauts and the ch sound, greetings, numbers, times and everyday nouns. Grammar begins with gender and the articles der, die and das, personal pronouns, regular and common irregular verbs in the present tense, and the basic rule that the verb comes second.

  • Suited to

This stage suits complete newcomers to German and broadly matches the A1 reference point of the Common European Framework. It is a good choice for anyone who wants the alphabet, sounds and first grammar rules laid out in a clear, logical order before tackling anything more demanding.

  • What you will be able to apply

You will be able to introduce yourself, ask and answer simple questions, give the time and talk about your family and work in short German sentences. You should feel ready to read basic signs and forms and to place the verb correctly in a main clause.

02
Level 2

Intermediate

415 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

This level introduces the accusative and dative cases, prepositions linked to each case, separable and modal verbs, and the perfect tense with haben and sein. Vocabulary covers shopping, transport, health, housing and free time, and example texts show how word order changes with time expressions.

  • Suited to

Written for readers who have met the basics of German and are working towards the A2 reference point. It suits those who can form simple sentences but want to handle routine situations such as shopping, appointments and travel, and to talk about what they did recently.

  • What you will be able to apply

After this stage you should be able to describe recent events, make arrangements and deal with everyday transactions in German. You will be able to use the accusative and dative with reasonable accuracy and read short emails, adverts and notices on familiar topics.

03
Level 3

Advanced

715 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

The material explains the genitive case, adjective endings after definite and indefinite articles, subordinate clauses with weil, dass and wenn, the simple past, the subjunctive II for polite requests and wishes, and relative clauses. Topics include work, health, media and personal plans.

  • Suited to

Suited to readers approaching the B1 threshold who already use the main cases and the perfect tense. It is the right choice if you want to connect ideas, give reasons and cope with most situations likely to arise when travelling, working or staying in a German-speaking area.

  • What you will be able to apply

You will be able to write connected texts about experiences, give reasons and state opinions using subordinate clauses. You should feel ready to understand the main points of clear texts on familiar matters and to use adjective endings and verb-final word order with growing confidence.

04
Level 4

Expert

1,015 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

Brings together all four cases, adjective declension and complex word order in longer texts. It adds the passive voice, n-declension nouns, verbs with fixed prepositions, common idioms and the difference between formal and informal written German, with model letters, reports and opinion pieces for close study.

  • Suited to

This final stage suits readers who have covered the grammar up to B1 and now want to consolidate it into confident, precise German. It is ideal for those who wish to tidy up persistent errors, broaden vocabulary and express themselves with more independence and style.

  • What you will be able to apply

You should be able to write well-structured German texts, adapt your tone for formal and personal purposes, and self-correct common case and ending mistakes. You will feel better prepared to handle unfamiliar situations independently and to keep extending your German beyond the B1 threshold.
