About this study guide

Small mistakes in grammar and punctuation can make careful writing look rushed or unclear. This material sets out the rules of standard English one topic at a time, beginning with parts of speech and the shape of a complete sentence before turning to tense, agreement, modifiers and the pronoun choices that often trip up confident writers.

Punctuation receives equal attention. You will read when a comma is needed and when it is not, how apostrophes show possession, and how colons, semicolons, dashes and quotation marks change the rhythm and meaning of a sentence. Content is arranged across four levels, from Beginner through Expert, so the early chapters settle the essentials and the later ones deal with finer points of style and usage.

Short example sentences, with corrected versions, show each rule at work and make the guide easy to return to whenever a question arises.

01
Level 1

Beginner

165 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

This level introduces the parts of speech, the basic sentence pattern of subject, verb and object, and the difference between a complete sentence and a fragment. It also covers capital letters, full stops, question marks, simple comma rules and the most common apostrophe uses.

  • Suited to

If you have ever hesitated over where a comma goes or whether to write its or it's, this level is a friendly place to begin. It suits learners returning to English writing after a long gap and anyone wanting firm grammar basics.

  • What you will be able to apply

Once you have worked through this level, you will be able to write complete, correctly punctuated simple sentences, recognise fragments in your own writing, and use apostrophes for possession and contraction with far fewer mistakes than before.

02
Level 2

Intermediate

365 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

The material covers verb tenses and consistent tense use, subject and verb agreement with tricky subjects, pronoun reference, compound and complex sentences, and the comma rules that go with them. It also explains run-on sentences, comma splices and how to repair each.

  • Suited to

This stage suits writers who handle simple sentences well but still make errors in longer ones, such as tense shifts, agreement slips or comma splices. It is a sensible choice for anyone preparing reports, applications or essays where accuracy matters.

  • What you will be able to apply

You should be able to keep tenses consistent across a paragraph, make verbs agree with collective and compound subjects, and punctuate longer sentences correctly, spotting and fixing comma splices and run-ons when you reread your own drafts.

03
Level 3

Advanced

665 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

This level explores colons, semicolons, dashes and parentheses, restrictive and non-restrictive clauses, dangling and misplaced modifiers, parallel structure, and the subjunctive. It also compares British and American conventions and looks at how punctuation changes emphasis and meaning in carefully built sentences.

  • Suited to

Advanced suits confident writers who want precision rather than rules of thumb. It is well matched to people who edit their own long documents, write academically or professionally, and want to understand exactly why a sentence works rather than guessing.

  • What you will be able to apply

After this stage you will be able to use semicolons, colons and dashes deliberately, avoid misplaced modifiers and faulty parallelism, and choose punctuation that clarifies meaning, and you should feel ready to proofread demanding documents with a careful eye.

04
Level 4

Expert

965 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

Expert looks at contested usage such as split infinitives, singular they and ending sentences with prepositions, the differences between major style guides, and punctuation for rhythm and voice. It also examines consistency across long texts and how to break a rule on purpose.

  • Suited to

This is the deepest level, meant for those who already write accurately and now want authority over difficult or disputed points. It suits careful self-editors and dedicated writers who want to make informed choices rather than follow rules mechanically.

  • What you will be able to apply

You will be able to weigh competing usage advice, choose a consistent style for a long document and apply it throughout, and explain the reasoning behind your grammatical decisions, bending conventions only when doing so genuinely serves the reader.
