Italian for Beginners

This study guide opens the door to Italian for readers starting from nothing. It explains pronunciation, greetings, numbers and the present tense in plain terms, then builds towards ordering food, asking directions and talking about yourself. Short notes on Italian customs sit alongside the language, so each new phrase comes with a sense of where and how it is used.

About this study guide

Italian rewards beginners quickly. Its spelling is largely phonetic, and many words will already feel familiar to English speakers. This material starts with the sounds of the language, including the rolled r and double consonants, then moves through articles, gender, regular verbs and the most common irregular ones such as essere, avere and andare.

Each chapter centres on a real situation: greeting a neighbour, reading a café menu, buying a train ticket or describing your family. Vocabulary lists, example dialogues and clear grammar explanations let you read, repeat aloud and write your own sentences at a comfortable pace. Cultural notes explain regional habits, polite forms of address and the rhythm of an Italian day.

The content is arranged across four levels, from Beginner to Expert, so you can return to later chapters when you feel ready for past tenses, the subjunctive and longer reading passages.
Each level is unlocked separately

01
Level 1

Beginner

165 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

Italian pronunciation comes first, including the rolled r, double consonants and the sounds of c and g before different vowels. You then meet definite and indefinite articles, noun gender, numbers, greetings and the present tense of regular verbs alongside essere, avere and andare.

  • Suited to

This level suits readers who have never studied Italian and want a calm, orderly beginning. If you are planning a trip to Italy, love Italian food and film, or simply want to understand a few words of a beautiful language, this stage starts exactly where you are.

  • What you will be able to apply

After working through this level, you will be able to greet people politely, introduce yourself, order food and drink in a café, ask for directions and understand short, simple sentences. You should feel ready to read basic Italian signs and menus with growing confidence.

02
Level 2

Intermediate

365 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

The material introduces the passato prossimo with both avere and essere, reflexive verbs, direct and indirect object pronouns and the imperfetto for describing the past. Practical chapters cover shopping, making plans, telling a story about your weekend and handling common mix-ups such as preposition contractions.

  • Suited to

Choose this level if you already know Italian articles, the present tense and everyday greetings, and now want to hold longer exchanges. It suits travellers returning to Italy, readers with family ties to the language and anyone who stalled after the first steps and wants steady progress.

  • What you will be able to apply

By the end of this stage, you should be able to describe past events, talk about routines and plans, and manage everyday situations such as booking a room or visiting a pharmacy. You will be able to read short Italian articles and personal messages with reasonable ease.

Level 3

Advanced

665 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

Here the congiuntivo takes centre stage, in present and past forms, together with the conditional, the future, combined pronouns such as glielo, and the passato remoto found in literature. You also study relative clauses, idiomatic expressions and the difference between formal and informal registers.

  • Suited to

This level is meant for readers who can already talk about the past and present in Italian and want greater precision. It suits people who read Italian regularly, communicate with Italian colleagues or friends, or want to express opinions and doubts without falling back on simple phrasing.

  • What you will be able to apply

You will be able to express wishes, opinions, hypotheses and uncertainty accurately, follow Italian newspaper articles and short fiction, and write clear emails in a suitably formal tone. You should feel ready to discuss abstract topics and adapt your Italian to different people and settings.

04
Level 4

Expert

965 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

This stage explores hypothetical sentences in all three types, the concordanza dei tempi, subtle uses of the subjunctive after conjunctions, regional variation and dialect influences, and stylistic choices in literary and journalistic prose. Idioms, proverbs and word order for emphasis round out the material.

  • Suited to

The Expert level is for experienced readers of Italian who want refinement rather than new basics. It suits those who already handle the subjunctive and complex sentences comfortably, and who now want their Italian to sound natural, nuanced and personal in conversation and in writing.

  • What you will be able to apply

After this level, you should be able to read contemporary Italian novels and essays, recognise shifts in tone and regional colour, and write persuasive, well-structured texts. You will be able to choose between near-synonyms with care and shape your Italian into a voice of your own.

Levels are unlocked with credits from your balance. You can add more credits at any time.
