About this study guide

Legal writing has to be exact, but it does not have to be hard to read. This guide is for anyone who drafts documents in a legal or regulatory setting, including people studying law and professionals in related roles, and it concentrates purely on the craft of writing. It is not a source of legal advice, and nothing in it should be treated as guidance on a particular case.

The material covers organising a memo around the question being answered, writing short and accurate sentences, defining terms consistently, citing sources in a tidy way and presenting an argument so that each point supports the next. It also looks at plain-language principles and common habits that make legal text confusing.

Arranged across four levels, from Beginner to Expert, the guide lets you strengthen your drafting gradually by reading, rewriting sample passages and applying the principles to your own work.

01
Level 1

Beginner

300 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

You will read about the purpose of common legal documents from a writing perspective, short and accurate sentences, active versus passive voice, and consistent use of defined terms. The level also introduces the basic shape of a memo that states its question and answer early.

  • Suited to

This level suits people who have started drafting documents in a legal or regulatory setting and find the style intimidating. It focuses purely on writing skills and offers no legal advice, making it a practical first step for law learners and related professionals.

  • What you will be able to apply

After working through this level, you will be able to write clearer sentences in a legal setting, use defined terms consistently throughout a document, and organise a short memo so the reader finds the main point quickly. It develops writing skill only, not legal judgement.

02
Level 2

Intermediate

500 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

This stage covers organising a memo around the question being answered, writing topic sentences that carry an argument, citing sources tidily and consistently, and applying plain-language principles. It also identifies habits that confuse readers, such as nominalisations, stacked qualifiers and needlessly archaic phrasing.

  • Suited to

Suited to those who can already write a basic legal memo but want their work to read more clearly and persuasively. As with every level, the material concerns the craft of writing rather than legal advice or the merits of any particular matter.

  • What you will be able to apply

You should be able to structure a memo so each section answers part of the central question, remove common sources of confusion from your drafts, and present citations neatly, producing documents that are both precise and easier to read.

03
Level 3

Advanced

800 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

Topics include building an argument so each point supports the next, handling counterarguments fairly, drafting with deliberate precision to avoid ambiguity, and adapting tone for different readers, from specialists to lay audiences. The level also covers editing long documents for structure, consistency and flow.

  • Suited to

This level is for writers with regular experience drafting legal or regulatory documents who want greater precision and persuasive force. It concentrates on advanced writing technique and, as throughout the material, does not provide legal advice of any kind.

  • What you will be able to apply

After this stage you will be able to write persuasive, well-ordered arguments, anticipate and address opposing points in writing, and revise lengthy documents so their language is exact and unambiguous. These are writing skills, separate from any legal judgement.

04
Level 4

Expert

1,100 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

This level brings together structure, precision and plain language, and examines the trade-offs between brevity and completeness, formality and readability. It explores editing other people's drafts, developing consistent house style, and writing for demanding readers under tight constraints without losing clarity.

  • Suited to

The Expert level suits experienced legal writers who want to refine a clear, authoritative style and make fine judgements about wording. It remains focused on the craft of writing and is not a source of legal advice on any matter.

  • What you will be able to apply

You should feel ready to weigh competing demands in legal writing with confidence, edit complex documents for clarity and consistency, and write in a polished, authoritative voice. The skills concern expression and structure, never the substance of legal advice.
