Poetry Writing Workshop

Poetry rewards close attention to sound, image and line. This material introduces the main forms, including the sonnet, the haiku, the villanelle and free verse, and explains how rhythm, metaphor and line breaks shape meaning. Along the way you will find prompts for writing and reworking your own poems quietly, at whatever pace suits you.

About this study guide

Many people want to write poems but are unsure where to begin or how to tell whether a line is working. This study guide offers a calm, practical route in. It starts with reading poems closely, noticing how word choice, sound and white space carry feeling, and then moves into writing short pieces of your own.

You will explore fixed forms such as the sonnet, ghazal and haiku alongside free verse and prose poetry, learning what each form makes possible. Separate chapters look at imagery, metaphor, meter, enjambment and the art of cutting a draft down to its strongest lines. The content is organised into four levels, from Beginner to Expert, so the ideas grow with your confidence.

By working through the prompts and revising your poems in your own time, you gradually develop a voice that feels recognisably yours.
Each level is unlocked separately

01
Level 1

Beginner

235 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

You begin by reading poems closely and noticing how word choice, sound and white space carry feeling. The level then covers concrete imagery, the basics of line breaks, simple repetition, and short forms such as haiku, with prompts for drafting brief poems drawn from everyday observation.

  • Suited to

This level is for anyone drawn to poetry who feels unsure how to begin or how to tell whether a line is working. No previous writing is needed, only curiosity and a willingness to read poems slowly and try short pieces of your own.

  • What you will be able to apply

Once you finish this level, you will be able to read a poem with attention to image and sound, write short poems built on concrete detail rather than abstract statements, and make first deliberate choices about where each line should end.

02
Level 2

Intermediate

435 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

The Intermediate stage explores metaphor and simile, enjambment and its effect on pace, and the difference between rhyme, slant rhyme and internal sound. It introduces the sonnet and free verse side by side, and looks at cutting a draft down to its strongest lines.

  • Suited to

Suited to people who already write poems now and then and want to understand why some drafts work and others do not. If you are ready to go beyond free-flowing first attempts, this level adds structure, technique and a clearer vocabulary for your craft.

  • What you will be able to apply

You will be able to use metaphor with more control, shape the pace of a poem through enjambment, and attempt a sonnet or a tightly edited free verse piece, revising each draft by asking what every line contributes to the whole.

03
Level 3

Advanced

735 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

This level examines meter, including iambic patterns and deliberate variation, along with the ghazal, villanelle and prose poem. It considers extended metaphor, tonal shifts within a single piece, and how stanza shape and white space can reinforce meaning at a finer level.

  • Suited to

Poets with a steady writing habit and a growing body of work will find this level useful. It suits those who want to handle more demanding forms, write with precise sound and rhythm, and build poems that hold several ideas in tension.

  • What you will be able to apply

After this level you should feel ready to write in demanding fixed forms without losing a natural voice, control meter and sound with intention, and revise poems so that their form, imagery and tone work together rather than separately.

04
Level 4

Expert

1,035 credits

What this level includes
  • Covered in this level

Here the material turns to voice and recurring obsessions, breaking and reinventing received forms, ordering poems into a sequence or chapbook, and revising across many drafts. It also discusses balancing clarity with ambiguity, and reading influential poets to understand their choices rather than imitate them.

  • Suited to

The deepest level is meant for poets who want to develop a recognisable voice and shape individual poems into a coherent body of work. It suits writers ready to question their own habits and make bold choices about form and subject.

  • What you will be able to apply

You will be able to recognise and refine the patterns that make your poems distinctly yours, arrange a group of poems so they speak to one another, and make difficult revision decisions with confidence and a clear sense of purpose.

Levels are unlocked with credits from your balance. You can add more credits at any time.
