About this study guide

Many people are surprised to learn how close Romanian is to Latin, and how much it shares with Italian, French and Spanish. It also has features that set it apart, such as the letters ă, â, î, ș and ț, a definite article attached to the end of the noun, and a case system for nouns. This study guide explains these points in plain language, without assuming any background in linguistics.

The early chapters focus on pronunciation, polite phrases, numbers and the present tense. From there the material works through plurals, possessives, the past tense and the future, always with example sentences drawn from realistic situations such as visiting a market or asking for help at a station.

    This stage introduces the perfectul compus, the future forms, the subjunctive with să, and the genitive-dative case with its possessive articles. You also study plural patterns, adjective agreement and reflexive verbs, using situations such as travel, family gatherings, health and eating out.

    Choose this level if you understand basic Romanian pronunciation, genders and the present tense and want to use them in fuller conversations. It suits people spending time in Romania, keeping up with Romanian-speaking relatives, or reading simple Romanian texts for pleasure.

  • What you will be able to apply

    By the end of this level, you should be able to describe past experiences, make plans, express needs with să constructions and follow short Romanian articles or messages. You will be able to handle common practical situations with more ease and fewer pauses.
